Indie studio thatgamecompany will conclude its three-game deal with Sony with the launch of Journey on March 13. Will the group still focus on Sony's hardware or possibly try their hands at PS Vita next? Somebody get Chuck Testa in here so he can respond aptly.
Jenova Chen, thatgamecompany co-founder and creative director, told Push Square that the plan is to expand the studio's audience beyond Sony's realm. "Right now we are very much exploring ways to bring our games to a bigger audience, beyond just PlayStation. We are still in the process of negotiating, but I hope that we can announce it [soon]."
By the sound of it, thatgamecompany already has its next project lined up. We've been through the ocean, the garden and the desert -- so where to next? If you've dreamed of a day when your shopping cart could slowly stalk you, as you peruse the aisles at your local Whole Foods, Microsoft is one step ahead of you. The company recently demonstrated a prototype of a Kinect-enabled shopping cart. Employing a monitor, a motor and a Kinect sensor, the cart can recognize a membership card, pull up a customer's shopping list and scan objects as they are placed in the cart. What's more, the cart will dutifully follow a customer around the store.
As demonstrated in the video above, the cart can even identify user preferences -- in this case, warning Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg that he picked up the wrong type of spaghetti (apparently he's going gluten free). Best of all, the cart allows customers to immediately pay for their purchases using a stored account, thus negating the need to stand in the checkout line (unless you want help bagging your groceries ... but you brought your own bags, right?).
We're all for a future of hyper-intelligent (and hyper-expensive) shopping carts but, if said future doesn't include checkout lines, how will we keep up with the life and times of Angelina Jolie? It must be terrifying to be a developer on a game that's just barely greenlit, facing down publisher meetings that could make or break all the hard work you've put into a particular project. Come to think of it, the stress and constant panicked feeling would probably be similar to how the prostitutes in London felt every nightfall during Jack the Ripper's heyday. Maybe.
F.3.A.R. developer Day 1 Studios knows how both of those things feel, to some extent, having begun work on Gotham by Gaslight, a steampunk-inspired adaptation of a one-shot Batman graphic novel, only to have it canceled shortly after. We previously got a peek at some concept art for the title, and now Siliconera has uncovered an animation test that it says comes from someone at Day 1.
Check out the burly Batman's flowing cloak as he strides around a dark London setting right here. Gotham by Gaslight featured beefy London Batman, gameplay vid reveals originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 27 Feb 2012 19:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Kurt Sutter, creator of Sons of Anarchy the television series, is looking to become Kurt Sutter, creator of Sons of Anarchy the video game. Sutter teased a possible Sons of Anarchy video game from a "major gaming company" in a tweet today, writing that he is "soon to be taking meetings" for the project to "figure out costs, platform and timing."
Sutter clarified his realistic expectations a few minutes after the initial tweet, saying, "to do a quality platform-based game costs tens of millions and takes years. We're toying with the idea of a high-end browser-based game." We're not complaining one way or the other, as long as video game Jax looks exactly like Charlie Hunnam. A video game based on The Boondock Saints film franchise has yet to be officially announced, but already some details are leaking out. After all, the MacManus brothers aren't exactly known for playing by the rules, unless it comes to truth, equality or shooting mobsters through the back of the skull. Critical Mass Interactive is developing the unannounced title, which is going to be a "full-on co-op shooter" for PC, Xbox 360 and possibly the PS3, CEO Matt Scibilia told G4.
Scibilia would like to release the game as a full retail product, but it may end up in episodic, downloadable form, he said. "We don't want to do a crap-ass franchise game," Scibilia said. "We're staying true to the content. We're looking to expand the story, not just retell the franchise.
"The Boondock Saints characters are so strong -- the banter, the relationships between Rocco and the brothers, the Catholicism, that will all be featured in the game."
Critical Mass Interactive will join members of the original Boondock Saints cast at SXSW's ScreenBurn Arcade series on Sunday, March 11 in Austin, Texas to talk details. Critical Mass also plans to show off the game in secret sessions at PAX East in April, and will reveal it for a wider audience at E3. Until then, watch the above trailer -- please watch it. You don't know how long it takes to find a reel of this film without any f-bombs. Medal of Honor: Warfighter, which uses the experiences of Tier One Operatives for its missions and plot, will avoid the conclusion of terrorist Osama Bin Laden's life in its narrative.
"That's not our story to tell," producer Greg Goodrich told OXM US. "That's 'family business' to [the Tier 1 Operatives]. ... It's been an interesting exercise learning what's okay and what's not okay [to portray in the game]." And who at EA is going to argue with a guy who can kill with a paperclip?
The Medal of Honor reboot also avoided possible offense two years ago by changing "Taliban" to "Opposing Force" for the multiplayer portion of the game.
"The objection was, kind of from an older generation that doesn't understand games, that the sound bite was 'Play as the Taliban and kill US soldiers,'" Danger Close marketing director Craig Owens told us at the time. "There still is, it seems, a group that's still a little bit leery of a game taking place around an active conflict." | Mass Effect 3: Space Edition almost raffled off in illegal lottery

Two men who tried to raffle off one of the early Mass Effect 3 "Space Edition" copies decided to call their plan off, after discovering their actions could include possible jail time. Kotaku reported earlier today that videomakers Michael Davis and Miguel Droz were holding a lottery where folks interested in winning a copy of the game early could pay $5 for a ticket, with 30 percent of the accumulated cash going to the Child's Play charity. One tiny problem: It's all so illegal.
Former Law of the Game on Joystiq columnist Mark Methenitis explained that the pair could have faced jail time or massive fines in their home state of Nevada, to say nothing of the federal implications for taking cash from across the country.
Droz told Kotaku this afternoon that they should have done their due diligence and are refunding everyone's money. They "super apologize" for wasting anyone's time. Guess they'll just have to suffer through playing Mass Effect 3 now instead of selling it off. | IndieCade early bird submission fee deadline is February 29
27.02.2012 21:00 0 views 0 comments
The early submission deadline for IndieCade ends on the final day this month, February 29, with prices jumping from $50 to $75 until the standard submission deadline ends May 1. We know procrastination is an art form, but that $25 could be spent on more essential items like ramen.
IndieCade got in contact with us to help spread the word that the only major disqualification factor for a game is if it's funded by a major publisher. Beyond that, the group accepts a variety of games, which are detailed after the break.
IndieCade's track record, with past winners including Limbo, VVVVVV, Superbrothers' Sword and Sworcery EP and Fez, is a great springboard for mass attention. If you're a developer or team that thinks it's got the next big indie game, take the chance and submit an application.Continue reading IndieCade early bird submission fee deadline is February 29 IndieCade early bird submission fee deadline is February 29 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 27 Feb 2012 16:00:00 EST. Once again, you'll get to vote on your favorite PSN games of the year by downloading a theme. Sony announced the 2012 version of its PSN Gamers' Choice Awards, along with nominations for standout PS3 and PSP games in ten different categories.
The biggest nominees include the "Best PSN Exclusive" group: inFamous Festival of Blood, PixelJunk Shooter 2, and ... Tetris; the "Best PSN Game" group: inFamous Festival of Blood, Plants vs. Zombies, and Resident Evil 4. The title of Best PSP game is between Tactics Ogre, Dissidia Final Fantasy, and, uh, the Dissidia Final Fantasy demo.
Voting for this stuff reaps benefits other than recognition for your favorite games: following the announcement of winners on March 6, each winning game will be discounted 30%, or 50% for PS Plus users.Continue reading Vote on your favorite PSN Gamers' Choice games to save Vote on your favorite PSN Gamers' Choice games to save originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 27 Feb 2012 14:30:00 EST. Bethesda Game Studios is looking toward the future, hiring for "Future Generation Console Programmer" positions. We should be clear: these jobs are for working on "an unannounced game on future-generation consoles." They're not for future generations of people. In fact, you need 5 years of development experience, so not being born yet is actually a big disadvantage.
The listing doesn't give much of a clue as to the technology Bethesda is targeting with its future Elder Scrolls or Fallout or whatever -- applicants need experience programming for PS3 and Xbox, and DirectX 11 experience is "a plus." | Klei Entertainment teases XBLA 'Mark of the Ninja' with text adventure
27.02.2012 18:30 2 views 0 comments
If you can make the right choices in this interactive text adventure, you too can see a teaser video for Klei Entertainment's upcoming Xbox game Mark of the Ninja.
Due this summer, Mark of the Ninja is a side-scrolling "stealth ninja game" with heavily stylized graphics, that involves reticle-targeted ninja devices like a grappling hook, caltrops, and throwing knives. Judging by the clip (and the preceding text game), the goal is to set up traps for unsuspecting enemies, and kill them undetected.
The video suggests that Mark of the Ninja is a Microsoft Studios-published game, which, combined with the release window, makes it a very likely candidate for a Summer of Arcade promotion. Mass Effect 3 is currently besting its predecessor in pre-orders, according to EA product manager Will Graham. Mass Effect 3 has "broken the targets set" and is "well ahead" of where Mass Effect 2 was this close to launch, he told MCV. He added that this is the first time a new entry in the franchise will debut on all platforms simultaneously, which just might have something to do with the boosted pre-order numbers (remember, Mass Effect 2 didn't hit PS3 until January 2011, a year after the Xbox and PC versions launched).
Then again, it could be the fact that the Mass Effect 3 marketing campaign has literally reached stratospheric heights. Seriously, that desk lamp you just bought? | Epic Games to privately showcase Unreal Engine 4 at GDC
27.02.2012 16:45 1 views 0 comments
Unreal Engine 3 is one of (if not the most) prolific gaming technologies in existence right now, powering everything from Mortal Kombat and Asura's Wrath to Gears of War 3 and Batman: Arkham City. If you're one of the many developers that depend on Epic's engine, the upcoming 2012 Game Developers Conference may be your first chance to see the next generation of Unreal Engine in action.
Epic will be showcasing Unreal Engine 4 to "select licensees, partners and prospective customers" behind closed doors at the conference; demonstrations will be given by appointment only, and all who attend must sign what we can only assume is the most air-tight, all-encompassing non-disclosure agreement ever written. For instance, developers allowed into Epic's demonstration area may not smuggle air out of the demonstration area inside of their lungs and then transfer that air to the lungs of another living person, under pain of chainsaw death. It's pretty serious stuff, but it's probably worth it to see some totally sweet tech demos.Continue reading Epic Games to privately showcase Unreal Engine 4 at GDC Epic Games to privately showcase Unreal Engine 4 at GDC originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 27 Feb 2012 11:45:00 EST.
