Sumo's Steve and Gareth talk Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing.
Sumo Digital's Gareth Wilson is a man at the mercy of some heavyweight irony. He once designed racing games for Bizarre Creations, former custodian of the Project Gotham Racing series, whose fabulous 2010 offering Blur poked fun at Nintendo in its marketing materials.

| Skyrim DLC: Dawnguard, Snow Elves and the Eye of Magnus
19.05.2012 8:30 0 views 0 comments
What do Bethesda's leaked files tell us about Dawnguard?.
It's going to be a tough year in Skyrim, possibly the toughest yet. A millennia-lost Elven race will return to plague the lands of Men, twisted beyond recognition by poison and enslavement. A mythical hero will lead them, clad in sorcerous metal which gives him command of the elements themselves. And a terrifying magical artefact, hidden away by an elusive organisation of mages, will reveal its true power and purpose. If you thought beating Alduin was too much to ask, you might want to head south for the winter.

| OXM Double Take - Coco & Ghost Recon

Have you no shame, Ubisoft?.
I've just been playing Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, and make no mistake - it ticks all the boxes. Guns. Gravelly accents. Wispy holographic targeting data. Giant-chested woman wearing khaki swimsuits. Wait, what?

Sniper Elite V2 developer throws weight behind community forum.
Rebellion Developments boss Jason Kingsley has said that popular user-driven editorial site N4G.com offers a more balanced, impartial take on reviewer reception than the oft-cited Metacritic.

| Rebel victory: how Sniper Elite V2 out-sold Prototype 2
18.05.2012 12:15 0 views 0 comments
UK-based Rebellion talks taking down the big boys.
We weren't all that chuffed with Rebellion's Sniper Elite V2, criticising its one-note mission design and spotty stealth sandbox play, but we're rather pleased nonetheless that it's managed to trump the vastly better-funded Prototype 2 at UK retail. Hailed by lobby group TIGA, the shooter's success is proof both that the UK industry still has legs and that so-called "niche" IPs can overtake the big boys, given canny marketing and consistent community engagement.

| DiRT Showdown video: watch Jonty and Mike go banger-racing
18.05.2012 11:34 0 views 0 comments
OXM's top two smash cars up for videogames.
DiRT Showdown has the makings of a glorious return to form for the arcade car-as-weapon genre, presumed dead alongside the classic Destruction Derby series. Sure, you've got the likes of Ridge Racer: Unbounded, where cars erupt into flaming, tumbling slow-mo at the slightest love tap, but there aren't many racers where destroying all rivals is as viable an event-winning tactic as placing first.

| Deep Silver: Dead Island 2 isn't being made by Yager

Spec Ops studio rumoured to be taking over from Techland.
Deep Silver has denied a report that the sequel to Techland's lovably wonky zombie masher Dead Island is in development at Spec Ops: The Line household Yager. It has, however, stopped short of denying the existence of Dead Island 2 itself.

| More next gen friendly Unreal Engine 4 screenshots surface

 Enlarge 'em and weep, Microsoft.
Epic has released a few more captures from its Unreal Engine 4 demo reel, detailed yesterday. In case you'd forgotten, this is the engine that's going to grab Xbox 720 by the hair, haul the console over its knee and administer a damn good spanking. Or so Cliff Bleszinski would have us believe.

Our reviewer gets to grips with super-specifics.
Our Dragon's Dogma review is now live, a roaring beast of internet journalism spanning three whole pages. You'd have thought that would be enough, really. You'd have thought Matt would be able to shut up about the game now. But life isn't that simple, and nor is Dragon's Dogma.

An Eastern take on Western RPGs proves fascinating and brilliant.
This is a Japanese role-playing game that's trying to appear Western, and at first glance that makes it look hopelessly bland - compelling you to traipse around a dull-green world fighting goblins and ogres with swords and magic. Don't be fooled: this is one of the most interesting, exciting games we've played in years.

| Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2

Back once again with the quill behaviour.
Of all the extended Sonic characters we're happy to welcome back, Tails is top of the extremely short list. He's just a decent chap. Bit sappy, maybe, but with a solid grounding in engineer work, he's got none of that ridiculous attitude that stinks up the Sonic brand. Rather than making this a simple keep-up sprint through the three new zones, Tails can team up with Tails to perform combo moves.

Microsoft "needs to damn near render Avatar in real time", says Bleszinski.
Epic's Unreal Engine 3 owns this generation of action games: of that, there can be little doubt. But will the company's Unreal Engine 4 become the Xbox 720 developer's middleware of choice? The answer, on the strength of new demo screenshots released today, appears to be a qualified yes.

EA Canada talks making football's great men greater.
Spoiler alert: I know very little about football. The damning evidence is below, scattered around an article on FIFA 13's nips and tucks and, specifically, how developer EA Canada has improved the virtual versions of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Peter Crouch.

"Project Icebreaker" launched to "get rid" of Infinity Ward bosses.
The on-going legal bust-up between Activision and former Infinity Ward bosses Jason West and Vince Zampella has taken a disturbing turn. Giant Bomb has got hold of a court filing which suggests the company launched a clandestine investigation to "dig up dirt" on the pair by accessing private email, computer and phone records, months before West and Zampella were formally cut loose.

| Inversion hands-on: gravitas and gravity do battle

Another look at Saber's supermanly spin on Gears.
I'd like to believe Saber Interactive's poking fun at the CliffyB-patented dudebro action game with Inversion, a shooter which purports to turn shootering as we know it upside down, but sadly, it doesn't seem to be happening. An hour or so in, bull-necked lead Davis Russell and his Latino friend Leo Delgado are rumbled trying to sneak out of a slave mine. "MOVE YOU DEAD," bawls one of the Lutadores, the game's utterly baffling subhuman baddies, aiming a gun with a carving knife strapped to it at Russell's head. "Don't move," our hero cautions Delgado in an undertone. "I think he'll shoot us if we move." Smart cookie, Davis. With crisis-handling skills like those, it's no wonder you're a cop.

Unsurprisingly, Microsoft-owned Rare is apparently working on "new IPs for future platforms". A little less unsurprisingly, the IPs in question may hail from the action-adventure or FPS genres. A return to the days of Perfect Dark? We can only dream.
